Local SEO in Dubai: Google Business Profile Checklist

Local SEO in Dubai depends on your Google Business Profile: the correct name and category, a findable address, steady reviews, and a website the profile can send people to.

Local SEO in Dubai depends on your Google Business Profile. It needs the right name and primary category, an address people can find, a steady flow of reviews and a working website behind the listing. The checklist below covers each part in the order I would fix them for a cafe, clinic, law firm or rental company in the UAE.

What local SEO covers in Dubai

Local SEO is the work that gets your business into the map results and the "near me" answers when someone in Dubai searches for a service. Most of that visibility comes from one place, the Google Business Profile. The rest comes from your website and from what other sites say about you.

Few people search for the service by name, and the clicks they make are expensive. "local seo dubai" gets about 170 searches a month, with a keyword difficulty of 0 and a cost per click of $43 (OpenSEO, October 2026, UAE). Business owners rarely search for the term. They search for their problem. Your customers search for "dentist JLT" or "car rental with delivery Downtown", and the map pack answers before any website does.

My position: Instagram ads in Dubai are crowded, and organic search and the map listing are among the channels where many competitors still put in little effort. That makes the profile one of the cheapest places to start.

Name, category and the rules Google enforces

Start with the four fields that decide which searches you appear for.

  • Business name. Use the exact name on your trade licence and signage. Google's guidelines forbid adding locations, keywords or slogans. Hypothetical example: a salon called "Lumen" renames its profile "Lumen Best Hair Salon Dubai Marina". It now risks suspension, and any competitor can report the edit.
  • Primary category. This field tells Google which searches to match you with. Pick the narrowest one that is true. A dental practice should choose "Dental clinic" over "Medical clinic".
  • Additional categories. Google allows up to nine more. Add only services you deliver at that location.
  • Description. You get 750 characters. Put the main service and area in the first sentence.

Ask your contractor which primary category they chose and which competitors in the top three map results use the same one. A contractor who did the research can answer on the spot.

Addresses in a city without street numbers

Dubai addresses are harder for Google than those in most cities. Many buildings have no street number, the same tower has several entrance names, and map pins end up on the wrong side of the block.

  1. Write the address the way a taxi driver would find it: building name, street, area. Add the floor and unit in the second address line.
  2. Drag the pin to the entrance customers use. This is often a different side from the parking entrance.
  3. Use the same building name everywhere: website footer, licence, booking platforms, Apple Maps, Yandex and 2GIS.
  4. If you work from a free-zone flexi-desk or a home office, do not list it as a customer location. Set a service area instead and hide the address.

The Makani number on the building plaque helps you and your clients confirm the location. Add it to your website contact page for delivery drivers and visitors.

Hours, phone and the WhatsApp question

A customer who drives to a closed door during Ramadan has every reason to leave a one-star review. Keep the hours current.

  • Set special hours for Ramadan, Eid and public holidays as soon as they are announced.
  • Use a local number that someone answers. A mobile number is fine if it is the business line.
  • Turn on the attributes that apply, such as wheelchair access, parking, outdoor seating or appointment required.

If your clients write on WhatsApp more often than they call, check whether your profile offers a WhatsApp or chat field and fill it in. Either way, put a wa.me link on the website page the profile links to, and make it the first thing visible on mobile. To tag that link, see how to track SEO leads from WhatsApp.

The profile hands visitors to your website, and in Dubai many of those websites let them down. A study of 537 Dubai restaurant and venue sites, checked on 13 October 2026, found the following (Savage Media study, 2026):

  • 55 sites (10.2%) did not open at all.
  • Of the 409 sites analysed in full, only 139 (34.0%) had a WhatsApp button.
  • Only 12 (2.9%) passed all five basics: HTTPS, a meta description, the menu as a web page, online booking and WhatsApp.

Before you touch anything else on the profile, open the website link on your phone over mobile data and check four things:

  1. The page loads, with no SSL warning.
  2. The phone number and WhatsApp link work with one tap.
  3. The address and hours match the profile word for word.
  4. The page title includes the service and area.

If you run separate pages per branch or per service, link each profile to its own location page. A clinic with a branch in Al Barsha and one in Mirdif needs two profiles and two location pages. If the site runs in English, Russian and Arabic, check the hreflang setup first, because a wrong setup sends Google the wrong language version.

Photos and video

Photos show customers what they will see when they arrive.

  • Upload the exterior and the entrance so people recognise the building from the street.
  • Add the interior at the hours you want to fill, plus staff at work and the product or service.
  • Upload short vertical videos of the space. A 20-second walk from the door to the table shows whether the place is easy to find.
  • Replace any stock image. Customers spot them, and a stock photo says nothing about your location.

Add new photos every month. If the newest photo on a profile is two years old, visitors start to wonder whether the place is still open.

Reviews: how to get them and how to reply

Reviews affect both ranking and whether people click. Both depend on regular, honest volume, so a one-off burst helps little.

How to ask:

  1. Create the short review link in the profile dashboard and turn it into a QR code.
  2. Put the QR code on the bill folder, the reception desk or the handover document. Staff ask at the moment the client is happy, after the meal or after the car is returned.
  3. Send the link once on WhatsApp after the service. Do not chase.

How to reply:

  • Reply to every review within a few days, in the language the client used.
  • For a negative review, state what happened, what you changed and how to reach the manager. Keep it to three or four sentences.
  • Never post booking details, the names of staff involved in a dispute or medical information in a reply.

Google's policy forbids paying for reviews, offering discounts in exchange for them and "review gating", which means asking only happy clients. If a competitor posts fake negative reviews, report them through the profile and keep screenshots.

Posts, services and products

Customers read these fields before they call, so fill them with answers.

  • Services list. Give each service a one-line description and, if you can, a starting price in AED.
  • Products. A restaurant can list its signature dishes. A rental company can list car classes.
  • Posts. Publish one post a week about something that changes, such as a new menu, a seasonal offer or holiday hours. Check with DET first if an offer may need a promotion permit in Dubai.

Hypothetical example: a car rental company adds the services "Airport delivery", "Monthly rental" and "Supercar rental with driver". Each line matches a search people type, and the profile answers it without a click through to the website.

How maps, your site and AI answers connect

ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews build local answers partly from the same signals: the profile, reviews, your site and mentions on other sites. A business is easier to identify when its name, address and phone match across all of them. Nobody can guarantee that an assistant will recommend you. The factors are explained in how AI assistants choose who to recommend.

Here is the result from my own work. Moon Mars is a shisha outsourcing company for venues in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha. Within a month, its website and Google listings brought direct requests for meetings and consulting through organic search. In the first month of the site, 10 restaurants in a narrow segment got in touch. I built the site to work alongside the listings, with city pages for Abu Dhabi and Doha and a set of articles. Leads are saved and sent to Telegram, so none are lost.

Tracking what the profile brings

Without tracking, you cannot tell whether a call came from the profile or from somewhere else.

  • Add UTM parameters to the website link in the profile, for example ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp.
  • Check the profile's performance report monthly: searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks.
  • Ask every new client where they found you, and log the answer in your CRM or a sheet.
  • Compare the profile numbers with Google Search Console data for the location page.

Questions to ask a contractor who offers local SEO:

  1. Who owns the profile after the work ends? It should be your Google account, with the contractor added as a manager.
  2. What will you change in the first two weeks, field by field?
  3. How will you report calls, WhatsApp clicks and direction requests each month?
  4. What do you do if the profile gets suspended?

What not to do

  • Stuffing keywords into the name. It breaks Google's guidelines, and competitors can report it.
  • Creating a second profile for the same location. Duplicates split your reviews, and Google may merge or remove them.
  • Listing a virtual office or a co-working desk as a storefront. Verification can fail, and if it passes, Google can reverse it later.
  • Buying reviews or swapping them with other businesses. Google deletes the reviews and can show a warning on the profile.
  • Letting the agency own the profile. If the agency leaves, you lose access to years of reviews.
  • Linking to a broken or slow page. Every click from the map then ends in a bounce.
  • Forgetting holiday hours. Ramadan and Eid hours change every year, and wrong hours lead to angry reviews.

Checklist

Area Check Done when
Ownership Profile on your Google account, contractor as manager You can remove the contractor yourself
Name Matches licence and signage, no keywords Same as on the storefront
Category Narrowest true primary, relevant extras Checked against the top 3 map competitors
Address Building, street, area; pin on the customer entrance A new client finds the door without calling
Service area Address hidden if clients do not visit Only the areas you serve are listed
Hours Regular hours plus Ramadan, Eid and holidays Updated within a day of announcements
Website link Location page, loads on mobile, WhatsApp in one tap Tested over mobile data
Photos Exterior, entrance, interior, staff, product New uploads every month
Reviews QR code and link at the right moment; reply to all Replies within a few days
Services Each with a one-line description and an AED from-price No empty service fields
Tracking UTM on the link, monthly report, "where did you find us" One sheet with monthly numbers

When every row is done, move to the location page on the website. Put the service and area in its title, add the same address block as the profile, and connect the page to Google Search Console. I build websites for this setup as part of my website service.

Questions and answers

How long does it take for a new Google Business Profile to show up in Dubai?

It depends on verification and on how many similar businesses sit nearby. Plan for several weeks of steady work. Nobody can promise a fixed date or a fixed position on the map.

Can I put keywords like 'best' or 'Dubai Marina' in my business name?

No. Google's guidelines ask for the name you use on your signage, licence and receipts. Extra keywords can get the profile suspended.

My business delivers to clients and has no shopfront. Do I show the address?

If customers do not come to you, set a service area and hide the address. Google expects this for service-area businesses, such as car rental with delivery or mobile services.

Should I pay someone to write reviews?

No. Google removes reviews that break its policy and can restrict the profile. Fake reviews can also carry legal risk in the UAE, so check the details with a lawyer before any review campaign.
