GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the work of making your business easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, understand and name in their answers. SEO measures success as a position in a list of links. GEO measures it as a mention or citation inside the paragraph the assistant writes.

This entry covers the definition and the checks. For the full breakdown of the signals assistants weigh, read the pillar guide GEO: how AI assistants choose who to recommend.

How GEO works

An assistant builds its answer from two places:

  1. Training data. This is text the model saw before its cut-off date. You cannot edit it after the fact.
  2. Live retrieval. The assistant runs a web search, reads a few pages and summarises them. You can influence this part, because it depends on what search engines can crawl and index today.

During retrieval the model looks for passages that answer the question in plain words, and it checks whether other sources agree. A line such as "Dental clinic in JLT, Cluster D, doctors speak English, Russian and Arabic, open 9:00 to 21:00" gives it four facts to quote. A slogan gives it none. If your site, your Google Business Profile and a directory listing show different hours, the model may skip you or repeat the wrong version.

Hypothetical example

Hypothetical example: a small car rental company in Dubai Marina has a homepage with a slider, a "Call us" button and a gallery. A tourist asks an assistant: "Where can I rent a Lamborghini Urus in Dubai Marina with delivery to my hotel?"

The assistant finds a competitor page titled "Rent Lamborghini Urus in Dubai Marina". That page lists the daily price in AED, the deposit, the delivery areas and the documents a tourist needs, and a directory listing confirms the same details. The small company's homepage never names the Urus, the Marina or delivery in text, so the assistant names the competitor.

The fix is a page for each car and location with those facts written out. The Lucent Rental site I built follows this structure in English and Russian. It has a page for each car, each brand and each brand-by-location combination.

Where GEO applies

GEO matters most where a buyer types a full question before choosing.

Business Typical question Facts the assistant needs from you
Clinic "Dermatologist in Jumeirah open on Saturday" Specialties, doctors, area, hours, languages
Law firm "Register a free zone company, explained in Russian" A guide that answers it, the author, a contact path
Lounge or café "Quiet place in Business Bay with Wi-Fi" Area, hours, menu as a web page, booking method
Car rental "G-Class with airport delivery" Model pages, price, deposit, delivery zones

For the law firm row, Lucent Legal is a site I built. It has 213 guides in Russian and 213 in English, each answering one question (Lucent Legal case).

GEO vs SEO vs AEO

SEO AEO GEO
Goal Rank in search results Win a featured snippet or voice answer Be named or cited in an AI-written answer
Unit of success Position and clicks One direct answer A mention or link inside generated text
Main levers Content, links, technical health, speed Question-shaped headings, short answers SEO and AEO levers plus consistent facts across sources
Main tool to measure Search Console Snippet tracking Prompt log and AI referral traffic

GEO depends on SEO. An assistant that searches the web cannot cite a page that search engines never indexed. AEO is the closest neighbour, and it ends at the answer box. GEO also covers answers written from several sources at once.

How to measure GEO

No dashboard reports your share of AI answers, so you combine three signals.

  1. Prompt log. Pick five buyer questions with area and language, ask them in at least two assistants, and record four fields for each run: - who was named - which pages were cited - whether your facts were correct - the date
  2. AI referrals in analytics. In GA4 or a similar tool, filter sessions by referrer: chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com. A rising count tells you that cited links get clicked. Many users read the answer and never click, so a low count does not prove you were absent.
  3. Index coverage. In Google Search Console, confirm that your key pages are indexed. Search Console has no separate report for AI Overviews, so treat it as the base layer.

Answers vary between runs of the same question, so judge by the pattern across two or three months. A single screenshot proves little. A step-by-step version of the prompt test is in How to check what ChatGPT says about your business.

What not to do

  • Blocking crawlers by accident. Some security plugins and CDN settings block every bot by default. Check robots.txt and your firewall rules before you write a single new page.
  • Keeping the menu or price list only as a PDF or image. A model may skip it or misread it. Publish the same content as an HTML page.
  • Letting listings drift. If one directory shows old hours and another shows new ones, a model that compares sources sees an unreliable business.
  • Paying for "guaranteed ChatGPT placement." Nobody controls the output, so a contractor who promises placement is selling something they cannot deliver.
  • Publishing AI filler at volume. Fifty pages that repeat what other sites say give an assistant no reason to cite yours.
  • Measuring with one prompt once. You will either panic or celebrate over noise.

Checklist

  1. Every key page states the answer in its first two sentences.
  2. Name, area, hours, languages and contact appear as text, matching your Google Business Profile.
  3. Prices or "from" prices in AED appear wherever you can publish them.
  4. Menus, price lists and service lists exist as HTML pages.
  5. Each service, product or location buyers ask about has its own page.
  6. Schema markup matches the page type.
  7. robots.txt and firewall rules allow the crawlers you want.
  8. The sitemap is submitted, and an llms.txt file sits next to it. The Moon Mars and Lucent Rental sites both have one; see llms.txt: what it is and how to write one.
  9. Five buyer questions are tested monthly in two assistants, with results logged.
  10. AI referrers are filtered in analytics and reviewed with the prompt log.

When the gaps are on the site itself, such as missing pages, PDF menus or no structure, the fix is website work.

  • AEO: optimisation for direct answers and answer boxes.
  • hreflang: tells search engines which language version to show, so a question in Russian lands on the Russian page.
  • Core Web Vitals: Google's page experience metrics. Google's documentation rates them "good" at LCP up to 2.5 s, INP up to 200 ms and CLS up to 0.1.
  • Google Search Console: shows which pages Google indexed. Live AI retrieval depends on that index.
  • GEO: how AI assistants choose who to recommend: the pillar guide to selection signals.

Questions and answers

Can anyone guarantee that ChatGPT will recommend my business?

No. Assistants change their models and sources without notice, and nobody outside those companies controls the output. A contractor can make your facts clear and consistent across the web, which raises the odds of being named.

Do I need a separate GEO budget if I already pay for SEO?

Usually no. Most GEO work overlaps with solid SEO: clear pages, named authors, facts in text, a consistent Google Business Profile. Ask your SEO contractor which of these items are already in scope before you pay for a new line item.

How long before AI assistants pick up changes to my site?

Assistants that run a live web search can reflect a change once search engines recrawl the page. Answers drawn from training data change only when the model is updated, and nobody outside the provider controls that date.

Is llms.txt required for GEO?

No assistant requires it, and support varies. The file is cheap to add and gives AI tools a short map of your site, so treat it as a low-cost extra next to the sitemap.
