UTM parameters: what they are and how to tag your links

UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a link that tell your analytics where a visitor came from, through which channel and from which campaign.

UTM parameters are tags you add after a question mark at the end of a URL, such as ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=bio, so analytics tools like Google Analytics 4 can record where each visit came from. Without them, much of the traffic from apps, QR codes and messengers lands in your reports as "direct", and you cannot tell which campaign paid off.

How UTM parameters work

When someone clicks a tagged link, the page opens with the tags still in the address bar. Your analytics script reads them on that first page view and stores them as the source of the session. The visitor sees the same page; the tags only travel in the URL.

Three conditions have to hold:

  1. The analytics tag (GA4 or another tool) is installed on the landing page.
  2. The tags reach the page intact, with no redirect stripping them on the way.
  3. The values are consistent, so "instagram" on one link and "IG" on another do not become two sources.

If the visitor comes back later by typing your address, that new session gets its own source. UTM tags describe a single click, and each click is recorded separately.

The five standard parameters

GA4 accepts a few extra fields, such as utm_id, but most small businesses need only these five.

Parameter Answers Example value Required
utm_source Who sent the visit instagram, google, newsletter, flyer Yes
utm_medium What type of channel paid_social, bio, email, qr, organic Yes
utm_campaign Which campaign or offer ramadan_iftar, summer_rates_2026 Yes
utm_content Which version or placement story_video, banner_top, flyer_a Optional
utm_term Which keyword (mostly paid search) car_rental_marina Optional

Use utm_content when two creatives or placements share one campaign and you want to compare them.

Hypothetical example: a clinic with four channels

Hypothetical example: a dental clinic in Dubai promotes a whitening offer in October in four places. It builds one link per place, all pointing to the same landing page:

  • Instagram story ad: ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=whitening_oct&utm_content=story_video
  • Instagram bio: ?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=bio&utm_campaign=whitening_oct
  • Printed card at reception, as a QR code: ?utm_source=reception_card&utm_medium=qr&utm_campaign=whitening_oct
  • Google Business Profile website link: ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp

At the end of the month, the manager filters GA4 by campaign whitening_oct and sees visits and booking-form submissions split by source and medium. If the reception card brought almost no visits, the clinic stops reprinting it.

Where UAE businesses use them

Tags are most useful on links that analytics cannot attribute on its own:

  • Social bios and stories. In-app browsers on Instagram and TikTok often pass little or no referrer data.
  • QR codes on menus, flyers, car stickers and table tents. A scan has no referrer, so without tags it shows up as direct.
  • Google Business Profile. A tagged website link separates map traffic from regular organic search.
  • Email and Telegram posts, which often open links in a way that hides the origin.
  • Influencer and partner links. Give each partner its own utm_source, and your reports will show the visits each one sent.

For how this connects to search traffic and chats, see tracking SEO leads from WhatsApp.

How UTM tags differ from referrers and click IDs

Agency reports often mix these up.

Method Who adds it What it tells you Limits
UTM parameters You, by hand or with a builder Source, medium, campaign you defined Only as good as your naming
Referrer The browser, automatically Which site the visitor came from Often empty from apps, QR, messengers
Google Ads auto-tagging (gclid) Google Ads Campaign, ad group, keyword, cost Full data only with a linked GA4 property
Platform click IDs (fbclid, ttclid) Meta, TikTok Lets the ad platform match the click Not readable as a campaign name in GA4

Search Console shows queries and impressions before the click, while UTM data starts at the click. More under Google Search Console.

The WhatsApp gap

Many UAE businesses close deals in WhatsApp, and UTM tracking stops at the chat. A wa.me link runs no analytics script, so the conversation carries no record of which ad or page the person saw.

You have two ways to bridge it:

  1. Prefilled message with a code. The link wa.me/971XXXXXXXXX?text=Hi%2C%20code%20W10 opens the chat with "Hi, code W10" already typed. Assign one code per campaign and read it when the message arrives. People can delete the text, so expect gaps.
  2. Log the click on your side. The page records the click with its UTM data before opening WhatsApp and puts a session code into the message.

On Lucent Legal, the second approach is in the code. The handoff from the site assistant to WhatsApp carries a #REF code built from the session, and the same code arrives in the Telegram alert. That lets you match a chat to the session that started it. Whether you need the API for this is covered in WhatsApp Business API: do you need it.

What not to do

  • Tagging internal links. A tag on a link from your homepage to your booking page overwrites the original source (say, Google Ads) with your own label.
  • Mixing cases and spellings. Instagram, instagram and IG become three rows in GA4.
  • Putting personal data in tags. Names, phone numbers or emails in a URL end up in analytics logs and browser history. That creates a privacy risk under UAE data protection rules, so check with a lawyer about what you collect.
  • Sending tagged links through a redirect that drops the query string. Some link shorteners and old redirects (from http to https, or from a non-www domain) lose everything after the question mark.
  • One generic campaign name for the whole year. By December, utm_campaign=promo tells you nothing.
  • Manual tags on top of Google Ads auto-tagging without a reason. The two can conflict and blur reports.

How to check your tags work

  1. Build the link with Google's Campaign URL Builder or your own sheet.
  2. Open it in a private browser window and confirm the tags are still in the address bar after the page loads.
  3. In GA4, open Reports > Realtime and look for your source and campaign within a minute or two.
  4. A day later, open Reports > Acquisition > Traffic acquisition, set the dimension to "Session source / medium" and add "Session campaign".
  5. For QR codes, scan the printed proof with two different phones before the full print run.
  6. Once a month, scan the source list for duplicates and odd spellings and fix them in the naming sheet.

If someone else runs your ads, ask for the naming sheet before launch. It belongs on your list of questions to ask a marketing agency.

Checklist

  1. Source, medium and campaign on every external link you control.
  2. Lower case and underscores, written in one shared sheet.
  3. A separate utm_source for each partner, influencer and printed item.
  4. A canonical tag on landing pages, so search engines index the clean address.
  5. Google Ads auto-tagging on and GA4 linked.
  6. A campaign code in the prefilled WhatsApp message wherever a campaign ends in a chat.

Questions and answers

Do UTM parameters affect my SEO rankings?

No, as long as you use them on links that point to your site from outside, such as ads, bios, QR codes and newsletters. Keep them off internal links and make sure your pages have a canonical tag, so search engines index the clean URL.

Can I track WhatsApp leads with UTM parameters?

Only up to the click. The tags show which link brought someone to your page, but nothing carries over into the chat itself. To connect a chat to a campaign, pass a short code in the prefilled message or log the click on your side.

Do I need UTM tags on Google Ads links?

Usually not, if auto-tagging is on and your Google Ads account is linked to GA4. Auto-tagging adds a click ID (gclid) and fills campaign data for you. Manual tags matter for Meta, TikTok, email, QR codes, influencer links and anything else Google cannot see.

Are UTM values case-sensitive?

Yes. GA4 treats 'Instagram' and 'instagram' as two different sources, so your reports split. Pick lower case and write it into a naming sheet that everyone follows.
