Fashion Brand Shoot and Backstage in Dubai: How to Plan Both
Plan a fashion shoot and its backstage as two separate deliverables, with their own shot list, crop, rights and person behind the camera, and both will be usable after one shoot day.
A fashion brand shoot in Dubai gives you usable backstage footage only when you plan the backstage as its own deliverable, with a shot list, a crop, usage rights and someone responsible for filming it. If backstage is an afterthought, you end up with shaky phone clips of people standing around, and the models' agreement may not even cover posting them.
Below: what to decide before the shoot day, which formats to ask for, the legal points to check and the mistakes that waste a booked day.
What a fashion shoot has to deliver
Start from where the content will live, then work back to the shot list. A typical fashion brand needs four groups of assets from one day:
- Campaign images for the website, lookbook and paid ads.
- Product-focused frames that show fabric, fit and details for product pages.
- Short vertical video for Reels, TikTok and Stories.
- Backstage footage that shows the people, the set and the process.
Each group needs a different setup:
- Campaign images need controlled light and time per look.
- Product frames need close-ups and a neutral background.
- Vertical video needs movement and framing with space at the top and bottom.
- Backstage needs a camera that moves freely while the main setup stays locked.
Write down how many finished pieces you need in each group before you ask anyone for a quote. The count sets the length of the day and the price.
Backstage is a separate deliverable
Backstage footage shows what the polished campaign hides: the stylist adjusting a hem, the model laughing between takes, the light being moved. For a fashion brand it also shows a buyer how the garment behaves when someone moves in it, which a still campaign image cannot do.
An example from my own work: I worked on a shoot for the LICHI fashion brand. The backstage cut I can publish is a 20.5-second clip, cropped to 612×758 pixels, with no sound track. That shape is close to the 4:5 of an Instagram feed post. A Lichi clip also sits in the Savage Media showreel under Product, Cars & Fashion, and the project is listed in my Lichi case.
A clip like that illustrates two practical points:
- Decide the crop in advance. Even a short backstage piece needs one, otherwise faces and garments get cut off when you reframe later.
- Consider a silent file. It leaves you free to choose sound at posting time, which matters for music rights.
Brief: decide these before the shoot day
Budget overruns on shoot days usually start with questions nobody answered in advance. Put these answers on a single page:
- Looks and order. How many outfits, in what sequence, with how much time per look.
- Hero products. Which two or three items must appear in every format.
- Backstage windows. When the backstage camera films: hair and makeup, set changes, the first take of each look.
- Who appears. Models, stylist, founder, staff. Each person on camera needs consent for each use.
- Crops. Vertical 9:16, feed 4:5, horizontal 16:9 for the website or YouTube.
- Sound. Whether you need interviews or voice, or only ambient sound with music added later.
- Deadline and approvals. Who approves the selects, by when, and how many rounds of edits are included.
Hypothetical example: a Dubai abaya label books one day for a new collection of six looks. Its brief includes:
- 45 minutes per look.
- Two backstage windows: makeup at the start and the rooftop setup at sunset.
- The founder as the only staff member on camera.
- The output: 20 campaign images, six vertical clips and one 30-second backstage piece.
With that brief, the shooter can tell on the first call whether the day fits into eight hours or needs a second day.
For the general commissioning process, see how to commission a video shoot in Dubai. If the brand also needs a founder interview on the same day, the planning points in corporate video: decide this before the shoot apply.
Formats and crops
If the camera operator frames tight for 16:9, the vertical version loses the shoes or the head. Agree on the crops in the brief, then ask how they plan to frame for them.
| Use | Shape | What to watch on set |
|---|---|---|
| Reels, TikTok, Stories | 9:16 vertical | Leave space above the head and below the feet; platform buttons cover the bottom and right edge |
| Instagram feed | 4:5 vertical | Works as a crop from 9:16 if the subject is centred |
| Website hero, YouTube | 16:9 horizontal | Shoot separately or frame wide; cropping vertical footage to horizontal rarely works |
| Lookbook, product page | 2:3 or 4:5 stills | Keep distance and light consistent across all looks so the grid looks even |
A practical test: ask the shooter to show one frame from a past project in two crops side by side. If the garment is still fully visible in both versions, their framing habits suit fashion work.
Locations, permits and heat in Dubai
Fashion shoots in Dubai often move outdoors, to rooftops, beaches, desert and city streets. Each choice brings its own rules.
Permits. Filming in public places in Dubai usually needs a permit, and landmarks, malls and beaches have their own conditions. Private venues such as hotels or rooftops set their own rules and may charge a location fee. Requirements change, so confirm the current rules with Dubai Film and TV Commission or a licensed production partner. Put the permit question in your first message to the venue.
Light. Midday sun in the UAE falls hard and flat on fabric. Most outdoor fashion work moves to early morning or the hour before sunset. The Savage Media journal lists golden hour times by month, which you can use to set the call time.
Heat. From late spring to early autumn, conditions outdoors are hard on people and equipment:
- Models in layered or dark clothing overheat fast.
- Makeup melts.
- Cameras can overheat too.
Plan shade, water, a cool room for changes and a shorter outdoor block. Schedule the backstage windows for those breaks. They give you natural footage without slowing the main setup.
Models, releases and usage rights
Model agencies in Dubai price by usage: where the images run, for how long and whether paid ads are included. Backstage clips on your social accounts count as a use. If the agreement says "campaign images, website, 12 months", a backstage Reel may fall outside it.
Before the shoot, get in writing:
- Every platform where content will appear, including backstage and paid social.
- The usage period and the territory.
- Whether the model can be tagged and whether they will repost.
- Consent from anyone else who appears on camera, including your own staff.
For day rates and how usage changes the price, see model booking rates in Dubai. For who owns the footage after the shoot, read the Savage piece on content ownership and contract clauses in the UAE. UAE rules on filming and publishing images of people are strict. The basics are in photographing people in the UAE, and a lawyer can confirm anything specific to your shoot.
Sound and music for backstage
Backstage clips usually go out with music. You have two options on set:
- Record ambient sound and decide later. You keep the option of real voices and laughter.
- Deliver silent files and add licensed music or platform audio when posting.
Business accounts cannot use every popular track. Instagram gives them the Meta Sound Collection, and TikTok gives them its Commercial Music Library. Both are narrower than the catalogues personal accounts get. A track from outside them can get the post muted or removed.
The Savage journal covers this in music copyright for reels and ads in the UAE. Ask your shooter to deliver backstage twice, once with ambient sound and once clean, so you can choose per platform.
Questions to ask the shooter before you pay
- How do you frame for 9:16 and 4:5 at the same time? Show me an example.
- Who films the backstage while you shoot the campaign?
- How many finished pieces do I get in each format, and how many edit rounds?
- When do I see selects, and when do I get final files?
- Do you handle the location permit, or do I?
- What happens to the schedule if a look takes longer than planned?
- Who owns the raw footage, and can I get it?
- Can you show a fashion or product project where the same day produced both campaign and backstage content?
A showreel shows the best ten seconds of each project. These answers show you how your day will run. My shooting service starts from 950 AED (Special offer). Ask me the same questions.
What not to do
- Leaving backstage to "whoever has a phone". The stylist and the producer are busy. Clips they shoot in passing are usually unusable.
- Booking models before deciding platforms. Renegotiating usage after the shoot costs more and sometimes fails.
- Packing ten looks into a half day. Rushed looks produce flat images and leave no time for backstage.
- Shooting outdoors at noon in summer. You get hard light, sweat and overheating equipment.
- Approving a single crop. Footage framed only for horizontal will not survive the vertical edit.
- Skipping the permit question. Security can stop a shoot in a public place, and you lose the day.
- Adding trending music to a business account post without checking that it is in the commercial library.
- Posting backstage with staff faces without their written consent.
Checklist
- Count finished pieces per format: campaign, product, vertical video, backstage.
- Write a one-page brief with looks, order, time per look and backstage windows.
- Fix the crops: 9:16, 4:5, 16:9.
- Decide who films backstage, and put it in the schedule.
- Confirm location rules and the permit with the venue and Dubai Film and TV Commission.
- Set the call time by light and heat; plan shade, water and a cool changing room.
- Get model and staff agreements that name backstage, platforms and period.
- Ask for backstage files both with ambient sound and clean.
- Agree in writing on the selects deadline, edit rounds and raw footage ownership.
- Before the day, map the backstage clips onto a posting rhythm so they go out over weeks rather than in one batch. Reels without a content factory shows one way to set that rhythm.
Questions and answers
Can the same person shoot the campaign and the backstage?
Yes, if the backstage is planned into the schedule as short windows between setups. If you want continuous behind-the-scenes coverage during every take, book a second camera operator, because the main shooter cannot film themselves working.
Do I need permission from models to post backstage clips?
Treat backstage as a separate use and put it in the model agreement, including platforms and duration. Usage terms in Dubai vary by agency, so confirm in writing before the shoot day.
Do I need a permit to shoot a fashion campaign in Dubai?
Shoots in public places in Dubai usually require a filming permit, and private venues set their own rules. Check the current requirements with Dubai Film and TV Commission or a licensed production partner before you book the location.
What format should backstage footage be delivered in?
Ask for vertical 9:16 for Reels, Stories and TikTok, plus a 4:5 crop for the Instagram feed. Agree on these crops in the brief so the camera operator frames with space for both.
